Getting commitment for adaptation options

Goal

The purpose of this step is to assure there is sufficient commitment (in terms of budget, support, capacity, time frame, etc.) from all stakeholders within (administration, CI operators, politicians, citizens) and outside (national government, regulators, …) the municipality for the adaptation options and to start the development of an implementation plan.

Preconditions

In order to get commitment on the adaptation options, commitment on the earlier stages is important; risks and goals and adaptation approaches.

Outcomes

Commitment of the relevant stakeholders on the adaptation options. The set of adaptation options is supported on the political level, by the citizens, has financial support and there is the capacity to that is needed the implement the plan in the next phase.

Guidelines

Commitment can be created by engaging stakeholders in the process. This is a challenging process that requires continuous efforts and a tailored approach. There is no one fits all approach. However, there are several aspects that are crucial when designing a process to get commitment of stakeholders. One of the key aspects is to create and maintain trust and relationships in the stakeholder engagement process.

Crucial in gaining commitment of stakeholders is:

  • Transparency & openness
  • Showing the added benefit for the stakeholders
  • Take time
  • Be patient

Managing expectations

  • It is a challenge to get commitment of stakeholders due to the lack of time and getting stakeholders be committed to participate in stakeholder engagement activities.

Capacity buildingi
